FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is MDF?

MDF is Medium Density Fiberboard, which is composed of sawdust, and a specially formulated resin (glue) mixed together. This product is then compressed in several stages, thus giving a finished product. MDF has become very popular material used in the trim carpentry, furniture, and kitchen industries.

There are a number of reasons why MDF may be used instead of plywood or chipboard. It is dense, flat, stiff, and has no knots and is easily machined. Because it is made up of fine particles it does not have an easily recognizable surface grain. MDF can be painted to produce a smooth quality surface. Because MDF has no grain it can be cut, drilled, machined and filed without damaging the surface. MDF may be dowelled together and traditional woodwork joints may even be cut. MDF may be glued together with PVA wood glue. Oil, water-based paints and varnishes may be used on MDF. Veneers and laminates may also be used to finish MDF.

What is a primed finish?

A primed finish or priming refers to the preparation stage of the mouldings. All MDF products are required to be primed/painted with an industry standard sealer that is referred to as primer. This sealer/primer penetrates and seals the MDF so that the finish coat of paint is applied with ease. The House of Fine Carpentry guarantees that every piece of moulding is primed and ready for a finish coat of paint, an enormous time saver over solid or finger joint wood trims. See our painting tips for additional information regarding paint finishes.

Do products have to be primed before painting?

Yes, all MDF, plaster and wood products as suggested above, should be primed. This is a task that is already completed when you purchase MDF mouldings from the House of Fine Carpentry.

Can MDF wood trims be used outdoors?
