CROWN MOULDINGS
When people think of crown moulding, visions of style, grace, and opulence inevitably come to mind. Crown moulding is famous for its ability to provide otherwise ordinary homes with exceptional visual appeal. The increase in ecstatic value is tremendous. Crown moulding, also commonly referred to as cove or cornice moulding has graced cottages and castles alike for centuries, and today you will find crown mouldings on the ceilings and walls of historic buildings, churches, banks, and private homes. It used to be uncommon in North American homes mainly because of cost, difficulty of installation and the time it takes to install plaster or wood species cornices.
Traditionally, elaborate cornice moulding was either made from molded plaster, or from solid wood such as Oak, then cut to fit around the room. For a time |
Paint Grade Pine or Poplar were also a popular choice because any gaps could be filled then covered with paint, whereas flaws in stainable solid wood mouldings are harder to mask.
Today's easy to install MDF mouldings are easier to finish and offer a variety of decorative profiles. MDF is less susceptible to warping and expansion because it has no grain; it also costs less than finger jointed paint grade wood. Using a process adapted from the picture frame industry in Italy, we apply the patterns using a wood paste over standard MDF trim. The result is an architecturally rich trim that's just as clean and easy to install as standard wood crown moulding. Now there is no need for the high cost and mess associated with installing plaster. All our cornices come pre-primed and ready to paint.
The height of crown moulding should be determined by the size of the room and the height of the ceiling. Crown moulding is often specified by designers at about three quarters of an inch of moulding for every foot of ceiling height (so a room with eight foot ceilings might use a crown moulding that is 5 to 6 inches high.) However, in smaller homes this formula can be scaled back by as much as half so as not to overpower tiny rooms.
