How To Choose:
Crown Moulding: Choosing the right size and model of crown moulding is not always as simple as one would hope. There are three questions you need to ask:
- How tall are the rooms you wish to crown? When choosing the size of moulding, you need to consider the proportions of the moulding relative to the size of the room. If you have an 8 foot ceiling you should consider a moulding no less than 5" wide. Once the moulding has been installed, caulked and painted you will realize that the moulding does not show up as much as you had originally thought. The primary reason is based on how the light reflects off of the ceiling and casts the shadow lines on the mouldings. At the ceiling level the lighting is not as direct, especially when have pot lighting which casts the light directly downward. You should also be considering a 5" baseboard to complement the crown and keep the proportions balanced. If you have a 9 foot or greater ceiling height, we recommend a 7" or a 9" crown with a 7" baseboard. The price of the moulding are very close to one another, and the labour is the same to install a smaller or a large piece. You are only installing the product once, so you should choose the moulding which you like most from the start, the cost differential will be insignificant as opposed to the benefits you will receive from having the most pleasing moulding of choice.
- How is the moulding going to fit in with your decor? The style of the moulding to choose should be based on several factors. How does it match with your furniture today and tomorrow. What is the general style of the home? Victorian? Georgian? Arts and Craft? Modern? Contemporary? Country? Will the moulding be of value to future buyers? Since you are only installing them once, choose the one that pleases you the most. You will see that the cost is insignificant once all things are considered.
- How much to spend on the mouldings and installation
